Fall is typically a season for colds and flu to spread, largely because activity in most of the country moves from outdoor settings to indoor ones. As we huddle closer together in more confined spaces, greater concentrations of microorganisms in the air become inevitable. This year, as we try to finally move on from the coronavirus pandemic, those typical concerns about indoor air quality in the fall are magnified exponentially; expect air purifiers and air cleaning machines to be regular sights and sounds this fall (and winter) in almost any place where people congregate. For smaller spaces—up to 200 square feet—the Fellowes® AeraMax DX5 is an ideal solution. It offers true HEPA filtration, meaning it will capture a range of environmental contaminants like pollen, ragweed, viruses, germs, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, and cigarette smoke. Moreover, the unit is quiet—even on its highest settings. It won’t be a distraction or hindrance in small offices or libraries or any other environments where excessive noise can be problematic.
Slightly larger spaces are better suited to the Alera® 3-Speed HEPA Air Purifier, which handles up to 215 square feet. It, like the Fellowes units, features true HEPA filtration; but it also has a negative ion function to help reduce airborne bacteria that may not be captured in the mechanical filtration/recirculation process. In environments where airborne bacterial concentrations may be higher than normal, this machine is an excellent choice.
Much larger spaces are the purview of the Fellowes® AeraMax DX95, which can clean the air in spaces up to 600 square feet. It shares many of the features with the DX5 discussed above but is larger. The fact that an air purifier this large can run so relatively quiet is a sight to behold. And for spaces larger than 600 square feet, several of these machines can be used in concert.
